Gina Chavez

October 5, 2019 8 – 10 p.m.

Latin-pop singer and songwriter Gina Chavez is a 10-time Austin Music Award winner and NPR Tiny Desk concert series performer known for passionate, bilingual songs that traverse cumbia, bossa nova, vintage pop, reggaeton, and folk. With dynamic vocals and sharp social commentary, Chavez and her band take audiences on a journey through the Americas, expertly blending sounds with tension and grace.

In 2014, her bilingual album Up.Rooted topped both the Amazon and Latin iTunes charts following a feature on聽NPR's All Things Considered. One song from that album, Siete-D (Grand Prize winner of the 2014 John Lennon Songwriting Contest), recounts her experience volunteering in a gang-dominated suburb of San Salvador where she is a co-founder of The Ni帽as Arriba College Fund for young Latinas.

Revered by critics, her 2018 album Lightbeam treads 鈥渟low-burn soul and uptempo R&B鈥 (NPR) as it explores the journey and hardships聽she and her wife have undergone to be able to publicly express their love for each other as Catholic Latinx women.

鈥淢ost striking is Chavez鈥檚 ease as she moves between social and love songs, between North American and Latin genres, and even between languages.鈥 -The Boston Globe
