Biographical Note:
听Dr. David Anderson was born April 28, 1930 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated in 1956 from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a degree in photography, Syracuse University in 1962 with his master鈥檚 degree, and a Ph.D. in educational administration in 1975 from Union Institute, Cincinnati. Dr. Anderson worked over the years with numerous educational and community organizations in Rochester including Action for a Better Community, the Urban League of Rochester, Rochester School for the Deaf, the Rochester-Monroe County Freedom Trail Commission, and taught African American studies at Rochester area colleges. For many years, Dr. Anderson served as a visiting scholar at 91制片厂 in the College of Arts & Sciences. As a master storyteller known as Mr. Sankofa, he embodied his quest for the community to learn from the past to inform the future. To further this goal, Dr. Anderson was a renowned Frederick Douglass reenactor, bringing to life for his audiences a most important (and local) historical figure.听 In 2022听 Dr. Anderson was awarded the New York State legislature鈥檚 highest honor, the Liberty Medal, in recognition of his contributions to Black history.听

David A. Anderson, Ph.D. collected materials related to the history of the African American community of Rochester, New York, as well as preserving artifacts documenting in photographs African American soldiers and World War I.

The 91制片厂 Archives also houses the Jean M. Czerkas Frederick Douglass Papers. Jean M. Czerkas was a Rochester, New York historian known for her many years of research into the life of Frederick Douglass and his family. Czerkas was a longtime member of the Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery, a trustee of the Landmark Society of Western New York, and in 2004 was appointed to the Rochester and Monroe County Freedom Trail Commission. Her research as a historian led to the discovery of the only known home owned by Frederick Douglass still standing in Rochester today. She also rediscovered the location of the graves of Rosetta Douglass Sprague and her family in Mount Hope Cemetery. Rosetta was a daughter of Frederick Douglass who was also interred in Mount Hope in 1895. In addition to her Frederick Douglass scholarship, Czerkas was a noted landscape historian and authored a book on local landscape architect, Alling Stephen DeForest. The 91制片厂 Archives is pleased to have been chosen as the repository of Jean M. Czerkas鈥檚 important scholarship related to Frederick Douglass.听
